Overview
The Dassault Rafale is France’s omnirole fighter—designed to perform every combat aviation mission from carrier-based nuclear strike to air superiority. France withdrew from the Eurofighter program to develop Rafale independently, and the result is one of the most versatile combat aircraft ever built.
Design & Development
The Rafale features a close-coupled canard-delta wing, extensive use of composite materials (70% by surface area), and the SPECTRA electronic warfare suite that provides one of the most comprehensive self-protection systems of any fighter. The Thales RBE2 was the world’s first operational AESA radar on a European fighter.
Operational History
Rafale has seen extensive combat in Afghanistan, Libya, Mali, Iraq, and Syria. It operates from both land bases and the carrier Charles de Gaulle. Export success has grown with sales to Egypt, Qatar, India, Greece, Croatia, Indonesia, and UAE. The aircraft carries the ASMP-A nuclear cruise missile as France’s airborne nuclear deterrent.
