Overview

The TAI Kaan (formerly TF-X) is Turkey’s ambitious fifth-generation stealth air superiority fighter currently under development by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI). Designed to replace the Turkish Air Force’s fleet of F-16 Fighting Falcons, the Kaan is a twin-engine, all-weather, stealth multirole fighter that completed its maiden flight on 21 February 2024. The program represents Turkey’s largest and most complex indigenous defense project, with planned service entry in the 2030s.

Design & Development

The program was approved in December 2010 when Turkey’s Defence Industry Executive Committee authorized the design of a next-generation air superiority fighter. TAI was assigned as the lead contractor, with initial conceptual design funding of approximately US$20 million. The development contract was signed in August 2016 with $1.18 billion allocated for technology acquisition and infrastructure.

The Kaan features a conventional stealth fighter layout with twin engines, internal weapons bays, canted twin vertical stabilizers, and a blended wing-body design optimized for low radar cross-section. The prototype initially uses General Electric F110 engines, with plans to transition to the domestically developed TEI engine for production aircraft.

TAI worked with Saab AB of Sweden for technological design assistance, and the program benefits from contributions by Aselsan and TÜBİTAK. The prototype underwent taxi and ground tests on 16 March 2023 and was ceremonially rolled out two days later. Three prototypes are planned for the initial development phase.

Operational History

The Kaan completed its historic maiden flight on 21 February 2024, making Turkey one of a select few nations to fly an indigenous fifth-generation fighter. The initial Block-0 production aircraft is expected by 2025-2026, with Block-1 deliveries to the Turkish Air Force planned between 2030 and 2033. Mass production of subsequent blocks is planned for 2034-2040.
