ESA Signs First Launcher Challenge Contracts

ESA announced its first European Launcher Challenge contracts on August 27. The awards total €186.9 million for Rocket Factory Augsburg, €158.9 million for PLD Space and €197.8 million for Isar Aerospace.

Funding becomes available as agreed milestones are met. The program supports new launch services and improvements to those services, with an initial requirement for providers to achieve an orbital launch before 2028.

ESA's evaluation considered engineering, resources, schedules and business cases. Its announcement said the MaiaSpace award process was still nearing completion. These are development and service-capacity commitments, not proof that every supported launcher is operational; successful flights and repeatable delivery remain the practical test.
