Flight Science Learning Activities & Quiz

Spend 20–30 minutes comparing aircraft, testing a sound-speed model and explaining an answer with sources. Use a computer, tablet or the printable worksheet.

Activity 1: one Mach number, two speeds

  1. Open the converter in temperature mode. Set Mach 2 and 15°C.
  2. Record km/h. Keep Mach 2, change the temperature to −56.5°C, and record the new result.
  3. Explain the difference using local sound speed. Switch to altitude mode at 11,000 m and check the reference temperature.

Activity 2: classify before comparing

Compare SR-71 and X-15. Record propulsion, mission and the evidence behind the speed. Then select an aircraft still in development and explain why a design target is not a completed record.

Activity 3: make a traceable fact card

Choose an aircraft and record its name, value, unit, source URL, event date and limitation. Add your own drawing or model photograph; preserve source and license information when using someone else’s image. Start from the dataset, then follow important claims to primary documents.

Five-question check

1. At Mach 2, which condition gives the higher km/h?
2. What does standard-atmosphere altitude mode represent?
3. How should SR-72’s Mach 6 figure be described?
4. Why explain X-15 and SR-71 separately?
5. What makes a speed citation useful?
