Overview

The F-106 Delta Dart was the ultimate Cold War interceptor, designed specifically to defend North America against Soviet nuclear bombers. It was the primary all-weather interceptor of the USAF’s Air Defense Command for over 20 years and was the last dedicated interceptor in US service.

Design & Development

An evolution of the F-102 Delta Dagger, the F-106 featured area-ruled fuselage design and a more powerful J75 engine. Integrated with the SAGE (Semi-Automatic Ground Environment) computer network, it could be automatically guided from ground-based computers to intercept targets. Its internal weapons bay carried nuclear-tipped AIR-2 Genie rockets and AIM-4 Falcon missiles.

Operational History

The F-106 served from 1959 to 1988 and was the backbone of continental air defense during the most tense years of the Cold War. An extraordinary incident occurred in 1970 when an F-106 entered a flat spin, the pilot ejected, and the unpiloted aircraft recovered on its own and landed in a cornfield virtually undamaged—earning the nickname ‘Cornfield Bomber.’

Armament

  • 1× AIR-2 Genie nuclear rocket (1.5 kT yield!)
  • 4× AIM-4 Falcon IR/radar missiles
  • 1× M61 Vulcan 20mm (later models)

Internal weapons bay only — all weapons stored inside for clean aerodynamics.
