
Heart Aerospace has flown its full-scale X1 battery-electric demonstrator for the first time. The piloted aircraft took off from Plattsburgh International Airport in New York on August 12 and stayed airborne for 27 minutes, reaching 1,100 feet above ground level while its propulsion system delivered more than one megawatt of power.
With a 106-foot wingspan, a length of 76 feet and a takeoff weight above 25,000 pounds, X1 is the largest battery-electric aircraft yet flown. The test was conducted under an FAA experimental special airworthiness certificate and included taxi, takeoff, climb, maneuvering and landing.
A Demonstrator, Not the Airliner
X1 is a full-scale technology demonstrator representative of Heart’s planned ES-30, not a production passenger aircraft. It is meant to validate aerodynamics, electric propulsion, flight-test methods and the company’s ability to build and operate an airliner-size design.
The proposed ES-30 is a 30-seat hybrid-electric regional airliner. Heart lists a 200 km all-electric range and an 800 km hybrid range, with type certification targeted for 2031. A first pre-production ES-30 is being built for flight testing planned to begin in 2028.
Why the Scale Matters
Small electric aircraft have flown for years; scaling batteries, motors, thermal management and certification processes to an airliner-size vehicle is the harder problem. X1 does not solve the energy-density limit that constrains electric range, but its first flight moves the technology from ground rigs and renderings into full-scale flight data.
